The guard is an added safety feature but is also very good in preventing you from accidentally brushing against the oily chainrings and avoiding the recumbent rider tell tale prints on your legs or trousers. The guard is fitted by removing the chainset and then clamping the guard to the bottom bracket shell. A chain ring of up to 58T can be used and if the chain should accidentally jump off the chainrings then chain can easily be lifted out from between the rings and the guard.
